IUCN News - International experts discuss China’s draft Protected Areas Law in Beijing: "Located within the Three Parallel Rivers World Heritage Area in China’s Yunnan Province, Diqing Prefecture is one the world’s most biodiverse areas. A workshop gathering international protected area experts and government officials was recently held to help protect this area of outstanding natural beauty, while encouraging its sustainable economic development.
The workshop, held on 16-17 January 2006 in Zhongdian in Yunnan Province, gathered international conservation experts and government officials with the objective of defining a roadmap to declare a national park and contribute to the economic development of Diqing Prefecture. This included identifying tradeoffs and options for economic development, such as through ecotourism, and exploring ways to provide essential income generating opportunities for the local people."
